Nature Up Close - in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe
Through her paintings Georgia O’Keeffe wanted people to truly look at nature. She was fascinated by the hidden world that exists in nature all around us but which we too often don’t take the time to notice.
Also a twentieth century painter, O’Keeffe combined this naturalism with a bent for abstraction which occurs when you take something quite small and blow it up large. We will follow her lead and take objects from the natural world and paint them on a larger scale.
We will first look at Georgia O’Keeffe’s sunflower paintings and do a small version of one of them on canvas. Then we will create our own version of nature up close using collage on paper.

About Joel Adas - I have been teaching painting, drawing, and collage to all ages for 30 years. I grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey but moved to Brooklyn, New York in the mid 1990s. I’ve exhibited my paintings extensively in New York and abroad and throughout my years in Brooklyn continued to teach in schools and community centers. My basic approach is to combine art making with some art history and a sense of where certain ideas and approaches to art come from.
