Alan was four years old when his parents moved to Erma from Philadelphia in 1955. The focus of his life was the ocean that surrounded him. He loved sailing and being on the water and grew up exploring the sounds in a small boat. Eventually he became president of the 4-H Boat Club. Alan had a “free-range” childhood with many humorous and not so humorous adventures. While Cape May was the center of the universe for him, the sea always exerted its pull. Following graduation from Lower Cape May Regional High School where he was president of the Class of ’70, an outbound tide took him further and further away. He attended college in North Carolina and New York and completed his graduate studies at the University of Southern California School of Journalism. His travels have taken him to more than 80 countries and he lived in Mexico, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Cape May, the place he once wanted to leave, now draws him back. His book, “On an Outbound Tide: A Memoir” was published in September 2024.
