Self-Portraits in the Style of Joan Brown
In this project we will look at the self-portraits of the San Francisco artist Joan Brown. We will particularly examine how she used animals as “familiars” to create another layer of meaning and symbolism in her self-portraits. This will be a starting point for creating our own self portraits using paint and collage.

About Joel Adas - I have been teaching painting, drawing, and collage to all ages for 30 years. I grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey but moved to Brooklyn, New York in the mid 1990s. I’ve exhibited my paintings extensively in New York and abroad and throughout my years in Brooklyn continued to teach in schools and community centers. My basic approach is to combine art making with some art history and a sense of where certain ideas and approaches to art come from.
